STATE OF THE MAP EUROPE
2025 CONFERENCE
Friday 14-Saturday 15 November, Abertay University, Dundee, Scotland, UK
About The Event
Join us in Scotland's cultural centre for the most epic of European Open Data geo conferences. All the OpenStreetMap-related talks, activities, discussion groups, and workshops you can handle.
Dundee is described as giving you "jute, jam, and journalism" but nowadays has a thriving videogames industry. Visit the Royal Research Ship Discovery which took Captain Scott on his first voyage to the Antarctic, or the V&A Design Museum. Accommodation is good value, so stay for a few days either side and make a trip of it!

Venue
Abertay University is sited in the centre of Dundee.
Abertay University
Abertay is a small, modern university in Dundee committed to equipping students for a bright future and successful career. Known for its expertise in video games and cybersecurity, Abertay also provides world-class degrees across a diverse range of disciplines, including biomedicine, forensics, sports science, and food science, among others. The university is also home to Abertay CyberQuarter, which fosters innovation and entrepreneurship in the field of cybersecurity in collaboration with industry partners.
Travel
Dundee is located north of Edinburgh, on the coast. Dundee City Region Convention Bureau has information on travel and local attractions.
Some delegates have shared their travel plans on the OSM Wiki for SotMEu 2025 so you can meet up along the way.
Trains
Edinburgh or Glasgow: There are regular trains to Dundee Railway Station from Edinburgh (Waverley) (1 hour 20 mins) and from Glasgow, which then continue into the highlands of Scotland. A few trains a day run direct from London Kings Cross (6 hours), but otherwise it is an easy change at Edinburgh.
London: UK long-distance trains need to be booked in advance. Tickets are generally available up to 27 weeks before travel. There will often be cheaper tickets if you buy them early. Try National Rail Enquiries, The Trainline, or RailEurope.
An overnight train from London, the Caledonian Sleeper, is also available, and tickets for it can be purchased at a 10% discount by using a code provided on your SotMEU ticket receipt. This option can be combined with a 20% discount for onwards travel with Scotrail, provided that you purchase those additional tickets in person; some conditions apply - see Scotrail's discount information page for more details.
Planes
Dundee has a small airport with limited options. Loganair offers conference delegates up to 30% off flights for travel to/from Dundee from London Heathrow (LHR), Sumburgh (LSI), and Kirkwall (KOI) Airports. Book at Loganair.co.uk before 17 November 2025, quoting promotional code 'SMEC2025' at the time of booking, for travel between 8-17 November 2025.
Edinburgh Airport is an international airport with many options. Take the 'Fly Dundee' bus from immediately outside Edinburgh Airport to get to Dundee city centre. The buses are clearly branded. Tickets can be purchased in advance. If you are worried about flight delays getting to Edinburgh then we suggest booking a later bus ticket - if you land and get your baggage quicker then you can login and change to an earlier bus time.
..and automobiles
Dundee city is quite compact and for the conference it will likely be easy to walk between places. There is no Uber service. 2 local companies, Dundee City Taxis tel: 01382 204060 and Tele Taxis tel: 01382 825825, have their own apps. There are taxi ranks at the side of the railway station, and at the Steeple Church. Any taxi you use should be licensed and have a taxi number on the side of the car. A 5-minute journey costs approximately £6 to £8.
If you are staying further out from the city, or go to see other towns, the main bus companies are Xplore and Stagecoach.
Hotels
Dundee is well supplied with hotels (budget to luxury), B&Bs (Bed and breakfast guest houses), and rentals.
Prices are very good compared to elsewhere in the UK.
We did have some rooms reserved, but this has passed the end date. These were on the Dundee booking portal for SotMEU. The hotels they featured are listed below.
You should be able to book rooms at the hotels directly on their website at regular rates. Some chains have a free membership which gives discounts.
You can contact the Dundee City Accommodation Team by e-mailing bookings@dacbres.co.uk or calling +44 (0)1382 787 044 if you need assistance in finding a place to stay.

Code of Conduct
OpenStreetMap UK is dedicated to providing a harassment-free conference experience for everyone, regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, age or religion.
We do not tolerate harassment of conference participants in any form. Sexual language and imagery is not appropriate for any conference venue, including talks.
Harassment includes verbal comments that reinforce social structures of domination related to gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, age, religion; sexual images in public spaces; deliberate intimidation; stalking; following; harassing photography or recording; sustained disruption of talks or other events; inappropriate physical contact; and unwelcome sexual attention. Participants asked to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately.
Exhibitors in the expo hall, sponsor or vendor booths, or similar activities are also subject to the anti-harassment policy. In particular, exhibitors should not use sexualised images, activities, or other material. Booth staff (including volunteers) should not use sexualised clothing, or otherwise create a sexualized environment.
If a participant engages in harassing behavior, the conference organizers may take any action they deem appropriate, including warning the offender or expulsion from the conference with no refund. If you are being harassed, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns that you are unable to satisfactorily resolve amongst the person(s) involved, please contact a member of conference staff immediately. Escalation to, and incident reporting by a small subset of conference team leaders will ensure that repeat offenders do not go unnoticed.
We expect participants to follow these rules at all conference venues and conference-related social events.
Reporting of concerns and incidents will be made to the small "Inclusion and Safety Team" to ensure they are dealt with consistently and repeated actions do not go unnoticed.
Clarifications for 2025
Contact Information: You can email the State of the Map Europe organising team with any concerns at info@stateofthemap.eu. The "Inclusion and Safety Team" are Gregory Marler, Jo Walsh, and Gala Camacho Ferrari. They will be identified at the conference and can be approached directly. All SotM Eu team members will be able to assist you in finding them, or having them come to you if required.
Toilets: The legal interpretation & guidance in the UK, and particularly Scotland, have been changing due to court rulings with respect to the Equality Act and it's relevance for people that are trans.
The conference is taking place in buildings of Abertay University and there are public toilets provided to all users of the buildings. The university does not monitor the use of it's toilet spaces.
State of the Map Europe welcomes people to choose the toilet facilities most appropriate for them. We have a thread on Mastodon showing the toilet facilities available which includes photos.
If anyone is limiting use of toilet facilities for an individual (verbally or physically) we would interpret this as harassment, and as per our Code of Conduct would not tolerate this. Please report any incidents to the Inclusion and Safety Team. An incident is not required for you to contact the team, they can also help by assisting to find safe-feeling spaces or to contact local authorities.
Accessibility: The conference will take place on the ground floor of Abertay University. The Old College Building has 6 steps with no handrail at it's main entrance. We will be primarily directing people via a service road (between Kydd Building and Old College Building) to use a step-free side door into the Old College.
There are a lot of double doors to pass through corridors of the Old College Building, these all have large buttons to mechanically open them. The toilets in the Old College Building are not to accessible standards.
The Kydd Building will be used for Friday morning registration and coffee. The entrance has small rotary doors, but on either side are standard doors with buttons to assist opening. We will be on the ground floor. We have posted photos of the entrances on a Mastodon thread.
If the Old College main entrance is not suitable to you, we have been asked that you get in touch with us so we can ensure the side entrance remains open for the duration of the conference.
Our main "Area" room is officially known as 1516 or 2516 and has tiered seating with space at the front for accessible seating. There is also space at the back/top which can be accessed from the 2nd floor either by using the lift(elevator) in the Kydd Building or the lift in the Old College Building near room 1007 (relation).
Please contact us if other information would be helpful for you, or if we can assist by guiding you around accessible routes.
